Photographs

The following photographs were sent to me from Pithotomists.
The overall appearance of the show remained remarkably consistent over the decades.

1948 Pithotomy Show

LEFT: This is the 1948 Pithotomy Show. From the left rear is Dr. Allan Woods, Professor of Ophthalmology, Dr. Alfred Blalock, Dr. Mac Harvey (who looks young enough that his ID should have been checked before the show), and Dr. David Guyton. According to legend, Dr. Guyton, when chief resident, performed cataract surgery on Dr. Woods and when questioned about having such a young surgeon perform the surgery, he replied, "If I can't train a surgeon skillful enough to do my own cataracts, then I don't deserve to be Department Head."

The following photographs were generously provided by
Dr. Robert Waugh, '48, and they are self-explanatory.
(Dr. Waugh also has recordings of nine songs from shows from the 1940s!)

Below: A couple of RSVP replies to show invitations.

LEFT: Drink stirrers. One wonders how much hospital equipment and supplies became props for shows.

Doug Lakin has provided a CD video of the 1987 Show. The following are some sample photographs form the video, including J. Alex Haller (or in show programs, J. Phalex Smaller) being awarded an honorary membership. You may order a copy of the video from douglakin@aol.com.
